What to Pack for a Multi-Day Touring Trip

The instinct on a first multi-day tour is to pack for comfort. The instinct worth having instead is to pack for the two or three things that actually go wrong on Nepali touring routes — weather, a mechanical issue, and a night colder than planned.

Riding gear and layers

• One warm layer more than you think you need — altitude nights are colder than valley nights, every time.
• A packable rain layer even in the dry season; hill weather changes faster than a forecast checked in Kathmandu.
• Spare gloves. Wet gloves the next morning are miserable and slow your reactions.

Tools and spares

• Tyre repair kit and a pump you've actually used before leaving, not just bought.
• Basic tool kit covering your bike's specific fasteners — not a generic multi-tool that doesn't fit your bolts.
• Spare bulbs or fuses if your bike still uses them, and zip ties. Always zip ties.

Documents and money

• Printed permits and ID, not just photos — checkpoints want to see paper.
• More cash than you'd carry in Kathmandu; card machines and ATMs thin out fast past the highway towns.

Pack it all so the heaviest items sit low and centred in the tail bag — a top-heavy bike on a loose jeep-track corner is a worse problem than anything left behind.
