Cold-Weather Layering for Himalayan Touring

Base layers, wind-stopping, and the mistake of relying on your jacket's liner alone.
The single biggest layering mistake on a Himalayan tour is trusting a jacket's built-in thermal liner to do all the work. Liners are designed for moderate cold on a commute, not for hours at altitude with wind chill on top of the actual air temperature — and by the time you realise the liner isn't enough, you're usually somewhere without an easy option to add more.
Build layering in three parts rather than one thick jacket. A moisture-wicking base layer keeps sweat from sitting against your skin on climbs, where you'll actually warm up before the descent cools you down hard. A mid layer — fleece or a light insulated piece — is what actually holds heat. Your jacket's outer shell should be there primarily to block wind and rain, not to generate warmth on its own.
Wind-stopping matters more than raw insulation at altitude. A well-insulated jacket with a gap at the neck or wrists loses heat fast once you're moving at speed, while a well-sealed but lighter layer underneath often performs better in practice. Check seals at the neck, cuffs, and waist before you leave, not after you're already cold on the road.
Pack one more mid layer than you think the forecast requires. Mountain weather changes faster than any forecast checked in Kathmandu can account for, and the cost of carrying a spare layer is far lower than the cost of being caught without one at 4,000 metres after dark.
