Riding at Altitude: What Changes Above 3,000 Metres

Thinner air, colder nights, and why your usual jacket layering stops working past Manang.
Carburetted and older fuel-injected bikes both lose noticeable power above 3,000 metres — thinner air means a richer mixture than the engine actually needs, and you'll feel it as flat throttle response on climbs that would be nothing at valley elevation. This isn't a fault to chase down; it's the altitude, and it eases as you descend again.
What catches riders off guard more than the engine is the temperature swing. A layering system that's comfortable at 1,400 metres in Kathmandu can be badly short by the time you're parked in Manang or Muktinath after dark, where clear-sky nights at altitude drop hard once the sun is behind the ridgeline. The gap between midday sun on tarmac and evening at the same spot is often 15–20°C, not the gradual cooling you'd expect riding at lower elevation.
Hydration and appetite both drop off at altitude in ways that sneak up on riders focused on the road. Drink on a schedule rather than by thirst, and eat something at every stop even if you don't feel like it — mild altitude fatigue looks a lot like ordinary tiredness until it isn't, and a rider making slower decisions on a narrow mountain road is the real risk, not the altitude itself.
Give your bike a longer warm-up than usual before moving off in the cold, and expect braking distances on cold, sometimes frosted tarmac in the early morning to be longer than what you're used to lower down.
