Rara Lake by Road: The Far-West Expedition Route

Rara Lake, in the far northwest, is reached by a road that tests a rider's patience more than their skill. The Surkhet–Jumla stretch is largely unpaved, cut into hillside for long sections, and can take a full day of riding to cover what looks like a short distance on a map. Treat it as an expedition leg, not a transit day — plan a single overnight around it rather than trying to push through in one go.

Fuel planning matters more here than almost anywhere else covered in this journal. Pumps are sparse between Surkhet and Jumla, and running dry on this stretch means a long walk, not a short one. Carry extra fuel in a proper container rather than relying on finding a village that happens to sell it by the bottle.

The road surface shifts constantly between packed dirt, loose stone, and washed-out sections depending on how recently it rained in the hills — which, in this region, can be a very different weather pattern from what Kathmandu is seeing that same week. Don't judge road conditions by the forecast at home.

Once you're at the lake itself, the reward is real: Rara is Nepal's largest lake, and the road in is remote enough that it stays quiet even in peak trekking season. Budget an extra rest day here before the ride back — both you and the bike will want it after that road.
