Langtang and Syabrubesi: A Route Write-Up

The ride north from Kathmandu toward Syabrubesi, the gateway to Langtang, starts easily enough through the valley before turning into one of the more technical rides on this list. The road climbs and drops repeatedly through Trishuli and Betrawati, with enough elevation change in a short distance that brakes and tyres both get a real workout.

Past Dhunche, the road narrows and the surface becomes inconsistent — a mix of aging tarmac and unpaved repair sections, often cut into a steep hillside with limited room to pass oncoming traffic. This is genuinely technical riding, not scenic cruising, and it deserves full attention rather than being treated as the easy final stretch before Syabrubesi.

The route follows the Trishuli river valley for a good part of the way, and landslide-damaged sections show up here on a similar pattern to other hill routes covered in this journal — check recent conditions before you commit, since a section that was fine last month can be a different story after a heavy rain.

Syabrubesi itself sits in a valley that catches cold air overnight even outside the depths of winter, so plan your layering for the evening, not just the ride in. If Langtang itself is the goal beyond the ride, this is typically where riders park the bike and continue on foot — treat the motorcycle leg as its own destination, with its own respect due, rather than a formality before the trek begins.
