Bandipur for a Weekend: A Short Touring Route from Kathmandu

Bandipur is the route to recommend to a rider who wants a real hill town, mountain views, and a night away from the valley, without committing a week to it. It sits just off the Prithvi Highway, roughly three to four hours from Kathmandu depending on traffic, which makes it a genuinely doable weekend loop rather than an ambitious one.

The turn-off from the highway climbs steeply through a series of switchbacks that are a good test of low-speed control before you commit to something bigger like Mustang or the Annapurna Circuit — narrow, blind corners, and the occasional local bus coming the other way with no real shoulder to give.

The town itself is car-free in its old bazaar core, so plan where you'll park before you arrive rather than riding in expecting street parking outside your guesthouse door. Most places to stay are a short walk from wherever you leave the bike, which is part of the town's appeal rather than an inconvenience.

For riders building up to longer tours, Bandipur is a useful proving ground: real elevation gain, a genuine hill-road riding style, and a short enough distance that a mistake in planning costs you an evening, not a week. Go for the views at Thani Mai temple above the town at sunset, and leave early enough Sunday to beat the highway traffic back into Kathmandu.
